Japanese sashiko thread
Sturdy, top-grade cotton embroidery thread from the Japanese manufacturer Olympus is a guarantee of quality. It is suitable for traditional Japanese sashiko needlework or anywhere a strong, non-twisted, non-mercerized, cotton thread is called for. For best results, use a Japanese sashiko needle – it won’t bend and has just the right length. Sashiko thread is perfect for creating designs on any plain-weave cloth – blue and white are both traditional – and can also be used to decorate denim. However, the traditional choice for sashiko is a cotton fabric woven especially for this purpose. Sashiko fabrics come in solid colors or have a wash-out template printed on. Sashiko traditionalists will go for a traditional plain weave dyed with natural indigo, while beginners and those who want to save the effort of marking a template, can choose from plain cotton weaves with pre-printed, water-soluble patterns.
