This black wool coating is, as the name suggests, a popular choice for winter coats and jackets. Wool provides maximum warmth and suits even the most elegant clothing styles. This 100% wool fabric is sturdy, but not stiff. It is soft to the touch, with a fine, brushed nap on the face side (when sewing, piece your garment so that the nap matches).
This fabric is fine enough to make winter skirts and blazers or a between-seasons jacket. It is also similar in appearance and hand to wool broadcloth and works well in historical re-enactment costumes.
Wool garments call for a sturdy lining like silk serge, rayon satin, or cupro. One of the benefits of wool is that it breathes; don’t waste that advantage with a polyester lining.
Care
We recommend dry cleaning this fabric at a reliable dry cleaner. Laundering may cause the fabric to shrink and can damage the surface nap. Do not iron; hang to allow wrinkles to fall out or carefully steam (without touching the fabric with the iron). When sewing, press on the back side on the wool setting; note the direction of the nap when placing on the ironing board.
If we recommend pre-shrinking the fabric before sewing we usually say so in the product description. Let the recommended care notes in the fabric description be your guide – they will tell you if the fabric can be washed or steam ironed. Woolen fabrics are usually pre-shrunk by steaming from the back. Some fabrics should be dry cleaned only. For larger projects or more expensive fabrics, we recommend testing anything (washing, ironing, etc.) on a sample. Wool is a natural material and is never absolutely predictable.
