Coutil is a special fabric used for making corsets. Woven of sturdy 100% cotton, it is known for its durability and stiffness. This coutil in white color features a herringbone weave (a broken twill) that lends added strength and keeps it from stretching out of shape. What’s more, coutil has a high thread count and is so perfectly stiff that it won’t give even a fraction of an inch. If you are looking to put together a really sturdy corset that won’t budge, you’re in the right place – no material is better suited for the job.
Coutil is a specialty fabric and not widely available. You may see corset patterns substitute ordinary cotton or linen twill in its place, but these cannot compare to a real coutil in terms of strength and stability.
You’ll most often see corset coutil used for the inner layer of the corset under a pretty face fabric like satin, dupioni, or brocade on the outside and a comfortable cotton lining underneath. You can, however, use it with confidence for a two-layer corset, either as a lining that doubles as a stiffener, or as a face fabric with a lining underneath.
For corsets made with coutil, we generally recommend spring steel boning, but the fabric is strong enough on its own that you can also choose spiral steel or plastic boning (the corset will hold firm even with these more flexible options). Be sure to use lacing bones where the corset laces up so that you can get a tight lace without worrying about torn eyeholes.
Generally, pre-shrinking is needed for linen, cotton, and rayon, but for finer fabrics (light rayon, Tencel and modal) proceed with care – don't use hot water or a hot iron, simply launder the fabric the way you will be laundering the completed garment.
