Reproduction of a historical fabric from 14th century Italy in natural silk and rayon with gold thread. Perfect for historical costuming as well as modern interiors and contemporary fashions.
To recreate this historical fabric, we did not turn to a textile fragment as we often do, but rather looked to fine art. Medieval painters often referenced concrete textile patterns in their depictions of garments, using them repeatedly with little variation.
The pattern reproduced here was popular among the Florentine school. It features a pair of lunging parrots and, even less conventionally, a pair of tortoises, the symbolism of which is unclear. The pattern is dominated by jagged palmettes and the creatures are surrounded by smaller floral motifs.
Painters applied the pattern in their works not just in garments, but also in curtains, coverlets, and drapery. For a wonderful example, see the bunting in the Madonna altarpiece by Jacopo di Cione from the late 14th century. You’ll also spot this pattern on the “cloth of honor” in Giovanni del Biondo’s portrait of Saint Zenobius. In this allegorical depiction, the cloth is held aloft by Humility and Charity to signify the virtues of a Christian life.
Di Cione’s wood panel depicting the Madonna of Humility with the Christ child swaddled in red brocade can be found in the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence. Del Biondo’s Saint Zenobius with the honor cloth in blue brocade is also in Florence, at the Duomo Santa Maria del Fiore.
This historical brocade reproduction is a Jacquard weave with a pure silk warp and a weft of rayon and lurex. It catches the eye with its striking color and dramatic, raised surface, an effect achieved by alternating weaves. Premium material makes this brocade very sturdy, yet soft, gentle to the touch, and breathable.
Reproductions of period brocades such as this are perfect for sewing historical costumes and also bring something special to modern interiors or contemporary fashions.
We recommend lining this brocade with a natural material such as silk or fine linen.
We recommend dry cleaning this fabric at a reliable dry cleaner. Iron on the back side on a synthetic setting.
Rarely! We produce reproductions of historical fabrics as limited editions. We want to guarantee a certain authenticity to all owners of historical costumes and decorations. We recommend that you buy these fabrics while they are in stock, as this is the only way to secure them for your project aside from custom ordering.
Limited editions are fabrics of exceptional quality or patterns that have been designed and produced exclusively under the Sartor brand. As a rule, they do not repeat and are therefore only available while supplies last. Don't miss your chance to own a true original.
The minimum fabric order is a length of 20 cm.
Of course! Historical patterns are characterized by high-quality aesthetic workmanship with an emphasis on elegance and harmony, which make them timeless works of art. They are suitable for modern interiors, where they bring an element of originality (try a picture, a pillow). In fashion, they excel in simple, even minimalist, garments, handbags and other accessories.
