Gold and purple medallions are set on an ebony background. Each features an ornamental tree, probably the tree of life. Winged lions frame the scene, evoking power, majesty, and fortune in Chinese tradition. Two birds in the crown of the tree may be a reference to celestial harmony or the fragility of life.
This pattern has been reproduced from a 12th century Byzantine silk. Its origins and dating may be deduced from the motif and certain similarities to a textile found in the tomb of St. Potentianus.
Medieval garments made of patterned silk such as this were a mark of prestige that only the upper classes could afford.
The original textile upon which this extraordinary reproduction is based is part of the collection at the Stadtmuseum Siegburg, Germany.
Like brocade, samite is a fabric where the pattern is woven in. The technique has been known since the Middle Ages. Samite uses a twill weave, which makes it very sturdy. Our reproduction is of pure silk, with a thicker thread that gives it a slightly pebbly surface. It is supple, with a soft hand, and breathes well.
Reproductions of period fabrics such as this are perfect for sewing historical costumes and also bring something special to modern interiors or contemporary fashions.

We recommend dry cleaning this fabric at a reliable dry cleaner. In our tests how to wash silk this fabric stood up to gentle hand washing. If you risk hand washing, use lukewarm water and a delicate detergent for woolens; do not wring or squeeze dry; block dry on a flat surface. Dry iron on the back on the lowest setting.
